COLLEGE PARK, Md. -

Head Coach Mark Turgeon

Opening Statement:

“Good win for us. I’m proud of our guys. We started slow but the press helped us. I thought Charles [Mitchell] got us going early. We built a 10 point lead and then let it go right before half. I thought the second half we were really good. Nineteen assists to eight turnovers, you haven’t seen that for a while with us. It’s good to see against a team that really pressures and defends. To score 72 points against them is a lot of points. I am really pleased with the win. We bounced back. I am proud of the guys, a lot of guys played well. We did it as a team. That is 19 [wins], it’s good for us.”

On Shaq Cleare:

“It is good to see another big body out there that Shaq can bang on. The Duke game last week he had [Mason] Plumlee and today he had [Devin] Booker. I always tell Shaq, they are big and strong, but not as big and strong as you are. He can wear them down. Shaq really played good, I was happy for him. Tuesday was his birthday at Boston College; it wasn’t a good matchup for him. He was really down after the game. He was good when we got it going. Charles [Mitchell] was good. I think our freshmen had 33 points today. We just seemed a lot more mature today than we have been in a while. I thought our defensive game plan in terms of knowing personnel and knowing who to guard was very good. We weren’t very good on close-outs but other than that we recognized situations and knew who to guard. We guarded well.”

On the big win:

“I kept wanting to win by more. I kept saying, lets win by 20, don’t look at the score lets win by 20. We aren’t capable of that right now. It was nice, it was nice to have a double-digit lead and in control. I felt like our defense was good enough that they couldn’t come back. Our offense was really bad there for a stretch there in the second half, but our defense was good enough to overcome it. It was a good feeling and it’s nice to win. We are heading in the right direction. We got back to rebounding and being more physical today which is what we need to be.”

On Nick Faust:

“I think he was five assists and no turnovers at Boston College, which means he has eight assists and no turnovers the last two games primarily at the point. Nick has put a lot of time into his jumper. We put the shooting machine, the gun, up a lot and he is on it a lot. For me with Nick it is just step-in threes. When he steps in he can make those, when he shoots those other crazy ones he isn’t quite as good. He did that. I thought his floor game was good; he got us into our offense. I thought he defended better; I am on Nick all the time to be an elite defender and take on a challenge. He really defended today and played better defensively too.”

Sophomore Guard Nick Faust

On playing as a team:

“I think executed well on the offensive end. Guys were playing strong from the beginning and we worked well as a team to get the win.”

On Shaquille Cleare and Charles Mitchell:

“It helps a lot having big bodies all throughout the game. It helps us pound on the other teams’ big guys. Shaq and Charles help us get inside and outside play.”

On running the offense:

“I’m trying to get the hang of it still and trying to execute every play the best I can. I am doing my best to run all of the plays that Coach wants us to run. I am trying to do whatever I can so we do not get a turnover. I also try to motivate my teammates.”

Sophomore Forward Charles Mitchell

On bringing energy to the team:

“I feel like every time I get a chance to support my team, try to get in the game and give some energy. Energy is contagious so if one person is doing something, the whole team starts doing something. I felt like I didn’t want to do anything else, I’m just going to give some energy. I just wanted to be the most energetic guy."

On the ups and downs of this season:

“I feel like the Duke win was an all-time high and then Boston College was a low, like what are we doing. We can’t have these ups and downs and the postseason is coming soon. We have to win consistently. So getting this win boosted our confidence even more knowing that we have two road games back-to-back next week. Playing hard and getting a W was a big boost for us.”

Freshman Guard/Forward Jake Layman

On making it to the tournament

“We need to win. We need to take care of business on the road now. That’s huge for us.”

On who Maryland needs to beat

“Everybody. Every game is huge for us right now and  we can’t afford to have any losses that are going to hurt us.”

On Shaq Cleare this game:

“It was great to see. With him it’s just hustle, and today you saw him diving on the floor and really outworking everybody so it was good to see.”

On this game as a “stabilizing game:”

“This just shows us how solid we can be. We had under 10 turnovers which is great for us and we are looking to carry that over into next game."

Clemson Head Coach Brad Brownell

Opening Statement:

“I thought Maryland played pretty well today to be honest with you, and we didn’t play well enough to win. We had spurts of good play, I thought we had about 3 or 4 stretches for six minutes where we played well. Maryland’s ability to rebound the ball offensively certainly was problematic, and their size made it hard for us to score inside. We turned the ball over a few times against the press, which was probably a little bit of a factor as well.”

On if there was one thing in particular Maryland did to get the win:

“We didn’t play bad today; we just didn’t play well enough to win. Defensively we weren’t sharp. We were a little bit slow at times. We were a step slow on about three or four plays. We gave up three offensive rebounds on free throws, and we didn’t win enough tough plays today. Against a team this big and strong, that was really my message to the guys ‘this is a physical game, the Maryland team is big and strong, the post players are grinders, and even their guards try to get down and drive you.’ I just didn’t think we matched their physicality the full 40 minutes and the times we didn’t, they got easy baskets. I thought Faust’s ability to make those three-pointers really loosened things up for them and took some stress off the game. It gave them the breathing room they needed at home.”

On if the composition of Maryland is rare in the ACC:

“They probably have more depth than most teams in terms of just being able to roll that many guys through. I don’t know if there’s much of a drop off, their bench post players played well. Certainly Alex Len is different from everybody else because he’s so big and so long. But the other guys are all big and strong and capable. That’s rare to have that many, Miami has three but [Maryland] has four. Even their guards, there’s a lot of balance there’s about five guys that can all play very well. They can bring in shooters and they can bring in drivers. Pe’shon Howard is a good player, and he’s a guy coming off the bench so there’s just a lot of good depth on this team.”

Clemson Freshman Guard Jordan Roper:

On Maryland’s second half run:

“We didn’t make a lot of tough plays. Maryland got a lot of 50-50 balls and we didn’t knock down the shots that we needed to.”

On Clemson’s play:

“It was an early game and whoever came out fast was going to win the game. We weren’t ready to fight today. Throughout the game [Maryland] fought more.”

Clemson Senior Forward Devin Booker

On what changed in the second half:

“Maryland was more aggressive on defense in the second half. I kept trying to get shots but they executed better than we did. That changed everything.”

On Maryland’s second chance points:

“That could have been the turning point of the game if we had kept them off the boards. That was partially my fault for not getting enough rebounds. They are an aggressive team. They’re at the top of the league in rebounds so that’s what they’re good at.”

On Maryland’s big lineup:

“I don’t think it made that much of a difference. We got on them early when they had all those bigs in there. It didn’t change much, but they do have a lot of depth in the post. That helps them get a lot of rebounds and second chance points.”
