ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Darryl Hill, a former member of the Maryland football team, received a special state commendation for his work with young athletes on Tuesday in joint session of the Maryland Senate and the Maryland House of Delegates in Annapolis.

Through a joint resolution of the Maryland Assembly, led by Senate President Mike Miller, Hill was cited both for his efforts to remove racial barriers from collegiate sports 50 years ago and for his efforts to remove economic barriers in youth sports today.

Hill, the first African American scholarship athlete to play varsity sports at Maryland, and the University were honored for their role in the integration of college athletics. Hill was joined in Annapolis by University President Wallace Loh, Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson, and his two grandchildren, Khalil and Anastasia.

In 2013, Hill founded Kids Play USA Foundation whose mission is to make youth sports affordable and available to all kids. The foundation is dedicated to removing the economic barriers to youth sports.
