No. 6 Terps Advance To Quarterfinals With 14-12 Win Over Hofstra

CATONSVILLE, Md. - No. 6 Maryland advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the fourth time in six years with a 14-12 win over unseeded Hofstra on Sunday at UMBC. The Terps will face No. 3 seed Princeton next Saturday at Rutgers in the second game of a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m. with No. 1 Syracuse against unseeded Georgetown.

Maryland's attackmen Andrew "Buggs" Combs (Baltimore, Md.) and Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.) combined for 11 points for the second straight week at UMBC. Mollot finished with a career-high seven points (three goals and four assists), giving him 19 points over the last three games. Combs scored Maryland's final three goals including the decisive goal which broke an 11-11 tie as Combs scored 5:55 into the fourth quarter to bput the Terps up 12-11. Combs continued his barrage, scoring with 5:37 and 2:18 left in regulation to make it 14-11. Hofstra's Tom Kessler closed out the scoring with his fourth goal of the game with 1:18 left in the fourth quarter.

After Hofstra scored the game's first goal, Joe Kostolansky's first of four in the game, Maryland scored five unanswered goals to close out the first quarter with a 5-1 lead. In the first-period run, Chris Malone (Timonium, Md.) scored the third and fourth goals, both on assists from Mollot. Maryland other goals in the run came from Mike LaMonica (Lutherville,Md.), Brian Zeller (Forest Hill, Md.) and Combs.

The third quarter saw Hofstra bounce back after the Terps moved ahead 9-6 on a pair of goals by Mollot and a tally by Zeller (Forest Hill, Md.). The Dutchmen scored the final four goals of the fourth including two by Kessler to tie the game at 9-9 after three quarters.

Zeller finished with three goals. LaMonica and Malone each scored twice. In nets, Pat McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md.) made 13 saves. Maryland outshot the Dutch, 43-41 while Hofstra won the groundball battle 46-43.
