No. 6 Terps Fall To No. 3 Princeton In NCAA Quarterfinals

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The No. 6 Maryland Terrapins' season came to an end with a 10-7 loss to No. 3 Princeton on Saturday at Rutgers Stadium. The Terps finished the 2000 season with an 11-5 record and played in the NCAA Quarterfinals for the fifth time in six years. Down, 10-3 heading to the fourth, the Terps made a furious comeback in the final period on two goals by Chris Malone (Timonium, Md.) and goals from Mike LaMonica (Lutherville, Md.) and Beau Pich (Ellicott City, Md.) to cut Princeton's lead to just three, but Maryland couldn't come any closer. It marked the third time in four seasons Princeton has ended the Terps season, beating Maryland in the 1997 and 1998 championship games.

Maryland opened with the first goal of the game on Brian Zeller's (Forest Hill, Md.) first of two goals 2:56 into the contest. Princeton scored the next three goals, including two by Josh Sims to go up 3-1, 30 seconds into the second quarter. Zeller netted his second of the contest to cut the lead to 3-2 with 11:34 left in the first half. The Tigers scored the next three to lead 6-2 at intermission.

Princeton opened the second half with three more goals to build a 9-2 with 6:33 left in the third quarter. Mike Morsell (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) stopped the bleeding for Maryland as he scored with 3:51 left in the third quarter on a beautiful pass from Andrew "Buggs" Combs (Baltimore, Md.). Princeton's Sean Hartofilis closed the Tigers' scoring with his second goal of the game with 1:10 left in the third.

Malone led the Terps with two goals and two points for four points. In his final game for Maryland, senior captain Zeller finished with three points (two goals and one assist). Zeller closed his Maryland career with 74 goals and 36 assists for 110 points.

In goal, Maryland's Pat McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md.) made 15 saves, allowing 10 goals. Princeton outshot Maryland 35-30, while Maryland won the groundball battle, 46-37.
