COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Big games from senior Dan Groot and sophomores Grant Catalino and Travis Reed propelled the No. 5 University of Maryland men's lacrosse team to a 13-6 victory over Bryant at a soggy Ludwig Field Sunday afternoon.

Playing less than 24 hours after a disappointing outing against UMBC, the Terps came out against the Bulldogs determined to get back on track. And Bryant helped Maryland right off the bat thanks to a pair of penalties by Anthony Ianello in the first minute of play. Groot converted on the first extra-man chance just 18 seconds after the whistle with a quick low-to-low shot from the right alley off of a feed from junior Will Yeatman. The second EMO took a little longer, but the result was the same. This time it was Groot picking up the assist thanks to a great shot by Reed from 12 yards out straight away.

The fireworks continued with the Bulldogs picking up their first score of the game at the 12:27 mark, but the Terps answered back quickly with a great give-and-go that started with Groot sending a pass to Catalino on the left wing, where he slipped the ball right back to Groot, who made a great cut down the alley and scored past Bryant goalie Jameson Love.

Catalino got into the scoring act at the 7:00 mark, but it was sophomore Ryan Young that set the goal up perfectly. Young separated from his defender behind the net and played cat and mouse with Love and Matt Murnane until they committed to come after him from one side. Young then raced around to the right side of the goal and flipped a cross-crease pass to Catalino, who finished from just outside the crease with a one-timer.

Bryant got back-to-back goals from Jim Long and Zack Greer to cut the Terrapin lead to one at 4-3 with 4:25 remaining in the first quarter, but Maryland scored the final two goals of the period to push its lead back to three heading into the second. Groot and Catalino hooked up again in a virtual replay of their earlier give-and-go goal. Catalino then scored his second of the day on the ensuing face-off when senior Jeff Reynolds scooped up the groundball and laced a pass to Catalino on the left wing, where the ripped a low-to-low shot past Love for the 6-3 Terrapin lead.

The Terps picked up right where they left off to start the second quarter with Yeatman scoring his lone goal of the game on a roll dodge from behind the left side of the cage. The Bulldogs tried to stay in the game, scoring the next two to cut the lead back to two at 7-5, but that's as close as they would get. Maryland ripped off the next five goals, spanning 18:20, to put the game out of reach.

Freshman Joe Cummings kicked off the scoring run with a man-up goal at the 3:27 mark of the second. Cummings made a nice cut to the crease and finished with a quick shot off of a feed from Catalino, who finished with a game-high five points on two goals and three assists.

Maryland continued its scoring run after halftime with an unassisted goal by sophomore Warren Hansen, the first score of his career, at the 9:05 mark. Reynolds followed that up with an unassisted goal of his own off of a great split dodge that freed him up for an easy shot from the right alley.

Reed scored his third of the game with 5:05 remaining in the third on a pick-and-slip play with Yeatman. Junior Adam Sear finished the 5-0 run at the 2:07 mark with a low-to-low shot from 12 yards out.

Bryant ended the blitz with a transition goal at 1:48 of the third to make the score 12-6, but the Maryland defense stiffened and held Bryant scoreless for the remainder of the game. Reed closed the scoring for the Terps with the lone goal of the fourth quarter, finishing off of a feed from Cummings.

Maryland's defense came ready to play and dominated the groundball battle, picking-up 49 to Bryant's 35. Reynolds picked up a team-high five GBs, followed closely by junior Dan Halayko, who had four. Seniors Jason Carter and Jeremy Sieverts, juniors Bryn Holmes and Yeatman, and sophomore Dan Burns all had three for the Terps.

Bryant's face-off expert Andrew Henness did win 16 of the game's 22 draws, but Maryland countered that by pressuring the Bulldogs into 32 turnovers, 16 of which were caused directly by a Terrapin player. Sophomore Brett Schmidt was outstanding for the Terps, causing a career-high four turnovers in addition to picking up a pair of groundballs. Senior Mike Griswold was given the task of covering Greer and held the NCAA's all-time leading goal scorer to two goals, while picking up two groundballs and causing a turnover.

Maryland returns to action next Saturday, March 21, with a crucial ACC game against No. 6 North Carolina. Face-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Ludwig Field and the game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
