ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The streak is over!

For the first time in five years Maryland did not beat Navy, 6-5, instead the Terps racked up a 9-7 victory at Rip Miller Field.

Freshman attacker Joe Walters (Rochester, N.Y.) posted his fourth four-goal game of the season and junior attacker Dan LaMonica (Parkton, Md.) posted a career-high six assists as the Terps broke the uncanny streak of 6-5 games.

Walters scored off a pass from LaMonica with 7:52 to put the Terps' ahead for good at the score of -- 6-5. LaMonica then set a new career-best as he assisted the goal that made it 7-5 setting up gradudate student Brian Hunt (West Chester, Pa.) with 6:22 left in the game.

Walters added his fourth goal of the game with 3:05 left to make it 8-5. Navy then made it interesting as Eddy Holton and Ian Dingman scored in a span of 59 seconds to make it 8-7 with 1:38 left in regulation.

Maryland senior long-stick midfielder Brett Harper (Columbus, Ohio) iced the game as he took a pass from Hunt and scored from about 30 feet out for the clincher -- making it 9-7 with 37 seconds left.

Navy tied the game at 5-5 as Ben Bailey netted a goal off a pass from Ian Dingman with 4:41 left in the third quarter. That set the stage for the fouth quarter where a 6-5 game was a distinct possibility. But as it turned out -- it was not to be.

It was the Dan LaMonica assist show in the second quarter as he set up all three Maryland goals on some sweet passing as the Terps took a 5-4 lead into halftime.

LaMonica set up both Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.) and Justin Smith (University Park, Pa.) for two goals within 1:21 to give the Terps their first lead of the game at 4-3. Navy tied the game as long-stick midfielder Thomas Morris made a full-fiels rush and beat Maryland goalie Danny McCormick (McLean, Va.) with 6:15 left in the first half. But the Terps took the lead in halftime as Walters scored his second of the game off a pass from LaMonica with 3:06 left in the quarter.

Navy built a 3-1 lead in the first 13:25 of action as Kelly Nash, Ian Dingman and Joe Bossi scored for the Midshipmen, sandwiched around a Walters' tally for the Terps. But Maryland got back to within one at 3-2 as and changed the game's momentum as junior defensive midfielder Paul Gillette (Millersville, Md.) converted with nine-tenths of a second left in the first quarter off a pass from LaMonica.

The Terps return to action on Saturday night as they host No. 1 Johns Hopkins at Byrd Stadium at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WMAR Channel 2 in Baltimore and nationally on CSTV Channel 610 on DirecTV. The game will be the first live event telecast by the new network CSTV.
