NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 6 Maryland men's lacrosse team improved to 12-2 overall in 2001 with a 10-5 win at Yale on a sunny Saturday afternoon. For the Terps, the 12th win sets a school record for victories in a regular season. Maryland had previously won 11 regular-season games several times, most recently in 1998 (when the Terps established their school record for overall wins in a season, when they went 14-3 an advanced to the NCAA title game).
Junior midfielder Mike LaMonica (Parkton, Md.) recorded his second hat trick in three games with three goals. Sophomore attacker Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.) recorded six points in a game for the sixth time in his career with two goals and four assists against the Bulldogs.
The Terps jumped all over the Bulldogs from the opening whistle, the Terps scored seven of the games first eight goals including a pair from Mollot to take a 7-1 halftime lead. Mollot also set up Mike LaMonica's first goal which gave the Terps a 1-0 lead just 1:42 into the game. Maryland's other first half goals came from Alex Poole (Hunt Valley, Md.), Andrew "Buggs" Combs (Baltimore, Md.), Jon Kemezis (Crofton, Md.) and Dan LaMonica (Parkton, Md.).
Yale cut the lead to as a small as four early in the fourth quarter at 8-4, but Maryland quickly answered. The Terps got back-to-back goals from Mike LaMonica and Chris Malone (Timonium, Md.) in the span of 28 seconds to make it 10-4 with 12:19 left in the game. Yale's Adam Werder finished the scoring with an unassisted goal with 6:20 left in regulation.
For the second straight game, Maryland dominated all offensive categories, outshooting Yale, 33-20 and scooping up 58 groundballs as compared to 23 for the Bulldogs. Behind six wins from each face-off man Brian Carroll (Far Rockaway, N.Y) and Ryan Moran (Setauket, N.Y.), the Terps won 12 of 19 draws. Goalie Pat McGinnis (Ellicott Ciry, Md.) made seven saves and reserve Dan McCormick (McLean, Va.) made four saves in the final 8:32.
The Terps finish their regular season against UMBC on Saturday, May 5 in College Park at 1 p.m. The selections for the NCAA men's lacrosse tournament will be revealed on Sunday, May 6.
