All-American midfielder Bill McGlone scored his fourth career hat trick to lead the sixth-ranked Maryland over No. 9 Towson, 9-5, at Unitas Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers jumped on the scoreboard midway through the first quarter when Keith Obloj scored an unassisted goal for a 1-0 lead. The Terps answered right back with McGlone's first goal at 6:27 to tie the score at 1-1.

Maryland took its first lead of the game at 1:24 of the first when All-American Joe Walters fired a low angle shot from the right wing that found its way past Towson goalie Reed Sothoron for 2-1 Terrapin lead.

The Tigers came back early in the second with back-to-back goals for a 3-2 lead. But the Terps, behind goals from Walters, Xander Ritz and Michael Phipps took a 5-2 lead into halftime.

The Terps dominated possession in the third quarter, outshooting the Tigers 14-3. But it wasn't until senior midfielder Andrew Schwartzman scored a man-up goal at the 4:57 mark that the Terps added another score for a 6-3 lead. The Tigers trimmed the lead to 6-4 with 11 seconds left in the quarter on a goal by Jonathan Engelke.

Towson scored again just over three minutes into the fourth to cut the Terrapin lead to one. But Phipps found a cutting Xander Ritz in the crease, who fired a shot past Sothoron to give the Terps a two-goal cushion. McGlone put the game out of reach with the final two goals of the game at the 9:18 and 6:25 marks, respectively.

For the game Maryland outshot the Tigers 45-27, including a decisive 29-8 margin in the second half. The Terps' special teams continued to shine as the man-up unit cashed in on two-of-five opportunities, and the final two Tiger penalties came with only 25 seconds left in the fourth quarter. On the flip side, the man-down defense was stellar not allowing Towson a shot during two 30-second penalties.

Sophomore goalie Harry Alford turned in another fine performance for the Terps, making 12 saves and collecting three ground balls. Other standouts for the Terrapin defense included sophomore defender Steve Whittenberg and sophomore defensive short-stick middie Travis Holmes, who each picked up four groundballs and caused two turnovers.

Maryland finishes its two-game road swing at Bucknell on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. The Bison are coming off an 8-7 overtime victory at home over No. 2 Navy this afternoon.
