COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 9 Maryland (4-1 overall) jumped all over No. 18 Delaware (2-3 overall) as the Terps posted an impressive 13-4 victory at a sunny Byrd Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Andrew "Buggs" Combs (Baltimore, Md.) got the Terps off to a quick start, scoring an extra-man goal just 1:03 into the contest and went on to equal his career-high in goals with three. Combs also tallied the eventual game-winner to make the score 5-1, 1:10 into the second quarter.

The Terps built a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 9-2, at halftime behind a well-rounded offensive attack and superb defense, anchored by junior goalie Pat McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md.), who stopped 15 Blue Hen shots. McGinnis allowed just three goals, marking the third time in five games McGinnis has held opponents to three goals or less. McGinnis' goals against average now stands at 6.09 and his save percentage is 71.1.

Maryland received two-goal efforts from Mike LaMonica (Lutherville, Md.) and Maryland Student-Athlete of the Week Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.). Both of LaMonica's goals came on the extra-man unit, which had a great day scoring on all three opportunities. Senior midfielder Brian Zeller (Forest Hill, Md.) handed out three assists to equal his career single-game mark in that category.

Marcus LaChapelle (Severna Park, Md.) added to his team-high goal total, netting his 10th of the season in the second quarter. Joining LaChapelle with one goal in the game were Geoff Burnham (Vestal, N.Y.), Chris Edwards (Baltimore, Md.), Craig Hochstadt (Columbia, Md.), Mike Morsell (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) and Willy Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.).

The win also signaled the 262nd career win for Maryland coach Dick Edell, who now stands tied with former Towson coach Carl Runk for fourth on the all-time collegiate coaching win list. Edell, who is the ACC's winningest coach with a record of 151-69 at Maryland, is now 262-116 in 28 seasons overall at Maryland, Army and the University of Baltimore, dating back to 1973.

Delaware was led by Liam Wortheimer, who had a pair of goals. David Mullen made eight saves for the Blue Hens.

Maryland, which has won three games in a row, outshot the Blue Hens 42-32 and scooped up 67 groundballs, as compared to 37 for Delaware. The game between the teams was the first since a May 4, 1988 meeting, which was the first night lacrosse game played at Byrd Stadium, a 17-7 Terp win. The Terps return to action on Saturday as they travel to undefeated No. 11 Cornell (3-0). Face-off is set for 2 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca. Maryland returns home to face Vermont next Tuesday, March 21 at 4 p.m.
