COLLEGE PARK, Md. –Maryland head wrestling coach Kerry McCoy announced the additions of Josh Asper and Shawn Contos to the wrestling staff for the 2014-2015 season Wednesday.
Asper will be the Terrapins’ volunteer assistant coach. A standout performer at Maryland from 2008-2013, Asper completed his career as the second winningest wrestler in school history with 152 victories. A two-time All-American, Asper won two ACC titles and was named ACC Wrestler of the Year in 2011. He served as an Administrative Assistant to the wrestling staff last season.
Contos joins the Maryland staff as the strength coach after a successful stint at Penn State in the same position. Contos arrived in State College in 2008 and helped propel the Nittany Lions to four straight NCAA team titles under head coach Cael Sanderson. Contos also served under Sanderson at Iowa State for one season.
"I am very excited to have these guys join our staff,” McCoy said. “Their skills and experience will be great assets to our team and they will have an immediate impact on our program."
Maryland kicks off its inaugural Big Ten season with a number of notable home opponents including Iowa, Ohio State, Penn State and Minnesota.
