COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Three University of Maryland women, including ACC Women’s Field MVP Thea LaFond, will represent the Terrapins next weekend after receiving invitations to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

ACC high jump champion Amber Melville and fellow school record-holder Amina Smith will join LaFond at the indoor nationals.

The event will be held on March 14 and 15 in Albuquerque, N.M.

In addition to its sixth-place finish in the ACC women’s team standings, Maryland learned Monday it was No. 9 nationally in the computer rankings of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

It is Maryland’s first appearance ever in the top 10 in the rankings, which measure a team’s national placements on performance lists in a number of events.

“I’m proud of how hard our team worked and the championship mentality our team brought to this season,” said head coach Andrew Valmon, now in his 11th season at Maryland.

“This kind of attitude is contagious, and we have a team that believes we can do this. They will keep passing on this philosophy to the next group, so we can have continued success.”

LaFond is currently ranked among the top six nationally in three events – the pentathlon and triple jump, both of which she won at the ACC Indoor last weekend, and the high jump.

She will be the No. 3 seed in the pentathlon next weekend (4,222 points), while Melville and Smith will be seeded fourth in the high jump (6-1.25).

Since the pentathlon, high jump and triple jump are all scheduled for Saturday, LaFond will be able to compete only in the pentathlon at the nationals.
