COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Adreené Elliott has been selected among 36 athletes across the nation to participate in the U.S. Collegiate National Team (CNT) program that will train in conjunction with the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships from June 22 to July 1 in Minneapolis.

“I am excited that Adreené has the opportunity to train with the Collegiate National Team program,” said Maryland head coach Steve Aird. “She is an impressive athlete with a drive to be great and has some lofty goals. I am sure she will represent Maryland well and there is no doubt this experience will help her prepare for her post-college career.”

Elliott will be providing blog posts from her experience as the program progresses.

The CNT program will be instructed by Mike Hebert and Bill Neville, who are both retired college coaches. Both Hebert and Neville have extensive coaching experience not only at the collegiate level, but also at the international level. Neville has served as head coach for both the men’s and women’s U.S. National Teams as well as assistant on the U.S. Men’s National Team. Hebert has contributed to the U.S. Women’s National Team as an assistant coach.

After the training portion of the program, the 36 athletes will be divided into three equal teams which will compete in a round-robin event June 27-30. The round-robin event may add an international team to increase the field to four teams that would complete June 26-30. This program is considered a second tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Team.

Athlete selections for all three U.S. Collegiate National Team programs are being determined based on evaluations from the U.S. Women’s National Team open tryouts held Feb. 21-23 in Colorado Springs, Colo., or based on past performances within the CNT program.

Yates Joins Elliott in Minneapolis

Maryland director of volleyball operations Steven Yates has joined Elliott in Minneapolis, serving as a technical director/assistant coach for the group.

“Steve is a great addition to the Collegiate National Team staff,” Aird said. “He has a great feel for evaluating talent and working with stats and I know he will do a great job assisting their staff during training and competition. The experience will also add value to our program as he will bring back some new concepts and insight after working with some great people.”

The CNT program training will be taking place in the Minneapolis Convention Center.
