NEW YORK – Former Maryland standouts Omar Gonzalez and Graham Zusi have been named to the Major League Soccer Best XI, announced by the league on Tuesday.
Gonzalez, an LA Galaxy defender, was tabbed to his third consecutive Best XI team. A finalist for Defender of the Year and the youngest among this year’s Best XI selections, Gonzalez served as the backbone of the LA Galaxy defense starting 27 games this season. His consistent play helped the LA Galaxy keep 10 clean sheets in 2013.
Zusi earned his second straight Best XI honor after scoring a single-season career-high six goals and tallying eight assists in 27 league appearances. The dynamic midfielder helped Sporting KC advance to the MLS Cup and likely solidified his spot on the US national team.
Maryland will travel to California for a rematch with the Bears Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in Berkeley. The Terps are seeking their second consecutive trip to the College Cup.
