Joey Barnes returns for his seventh season as assistant coach for the Terrapins. He has more than 30 years coaching experience. Originally from New York City, Barnes is a retired U.S. Naval officer with 26 years of active duty service.
Prior to accepting the assistant coach position at Maryland, Barnes served as a volunteer coach with the Terps for six years. He also coached at Kadena High School for two years. His naval post has allowed Barnes to teach tennis in 12 different countries and all throughout the U.S. He has been active in ensuring the growth of the tennis by coaching the USTA Maryland Travel Team, the USTA League Level Teams and USTA Area Training Camps.
In addition to coaching teams, Barnes has 33 years experience as a private instructor, where he has coached several WTA as well as ATP players.
Barnes has served as the director of tennis at both the Georgetown Prep Tennis Club and the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Academy. He has also held coordinator positions with Nueven Senior Tours and the Acura WTA events.
Currently, Barnes is a certified member of the Professional Tennis Registry, the USTA National Player Development Coach Team and the USA Tennis High Performance Coaching Program.
