COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Following a season-opening win over Howard, the Maryland women's tennis team heads to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The 40th-ranked Terps (1-0) open Saturday against No. 10 Michigan at 10 a.m. and will face either No. 21 Notre Dame or No. 35 Yale on Sunday.
Against Howard on Tuesday, the Terps swept all nine matches en route to a 7-0 victory. In singles, 28th-ranked Cristina Stancu won in straight sets while 37th-ranked Welma Luus and Ana Belzunce won, 8-1, in doubles competition.
The Wolverines opened the season with a 7-0 win over Western Michigan. Michigan features four singles players and two doubles teams in the ITA top-60. The top of Michigan's lineup includes No. 36 Emina Bektas, No. 45 Brooke Bolender and No. 53 Sam Crister.
Notre Dame's Kristy Frilling is a four-time ITA All-American. Frilling partnered with Shannon Mathews to win the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional title and advanced to the USTA/ITA National Indoor doubles final in the fall. The duo enters the weekend ranked fifth.
While the Bulldogs do not feature a ranked singles player, Yale has a trio of ranked doubles teams led by 16th-ranked Hanna Yu and Victoria Brook. Blair Seiderman and Stephanie Kent are ranked 39th and Amber Li and Annie Sullivan are ranked 59th.
ITA Kick-Off Weekend consists of 60 men's and women's teams competing across the country for the right to qualify at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships to be hosted in February by the University of Virginia.
