ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Juniors Ana Belzunce and Vroni Van Berlo earned victories in singles, but the 40th-ranked Maryland women's tennis team fell to 10th-ranked Michigan, 5-2, Saturday morning at the Varsity Tennis Center in the opening match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
At No. 2 singles, Belzunce defeated 46th-ranked Brooke Bolender, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-5), while Van Berlo knocked off Kristen Dodge in straight set, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4.
"I'm pleased with how the team competed today," said head coach Dianne Matias. "Everyone was invested and fought hard. Obviously, it's disappointing to lose but there were a lot of positive things from today's match. We can't let the result from today discourage us because tomorrow is another opportunity to play a top team."
The headline match at doubles was Michigan's 24th-ranked duo of Emina Bektas and Brooke Bolender against Maryland's 37th-ranked team of Belzunce and sophomore Welma Luus. Belzunce and Luus pushed the Wolverines' top pairing to a tiebreaker, but eventually lost, 8-7 (8-6).
Michigan swept doubles to lead 1-0 heading into singles. The Terps earned victories at No. 2 and 5 singles.
Maryland is back in action tomorrow against 21st-ranked Notre Dame at 10 a.m. at Varsity Tennis Center.
