RICHMOND, Va - Freshmen Sarah Gealer and Olga Bredikhina both recorded singles victories, but No. 52 Virginia Commonwealth edged the Maryland women's tennis team, 4-3, at the Thalhimer Tennis Center Friday afternoon.
The Terrapins (4-4, 0-1 ACC) dropped the doubles point to the Rams (10-4, 0-0 Atlantic 10), but fought hard in singles, spitting the six contests. Freshmen Gealer, Olga Bredikhina and Nataliya Bredikhina all picked up victories for Maryland, who is now 0-3 on the road this season.
"In general, it was the best team effort, fight and energy we've seen this year," head coach Daria Panova said. "I think the girls really implemented everything we worked on and now we can just move forward. I am really proud of every single person on the team."
In doubles, the Terrapins never quite got going, taking losses at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Panova sent out the same lineup for the second straight match, with Senior Vroni Van Berlo and Gealer occupying the top spot. Unfortunately for the Maryland, the pair did not replicate its success against Richmond losing 8-4 to Daria Yakauleva and Olga Barscheuskaya .
The Terrapins dropped into a deeper hole when Van Berlo and freshman Olga Gaistruk suffered quick singles defeats. Van Berlo is now 6-2 at No. 1 singles this season, her only other defeat coming in Maryland's 6-1 loss to Harvard on Feb 2.
Three singles victories by three freshmen gave Maryland life, but freshman Gabriela Srodowski lost a tough three setter that sealed the match for VCU.
The Terrapins went 1-1 in their two match swing against Atlantic 10 foes. Maryland defeated Richmond, 6-1, last Sunday.
Gealer now has two wins in two matches at the No. 2 singles position. She was 3-2 at the No. 3 spot.
Maryland resumes ACC play against border rival Virginia next Saturday. Action is scheduled to begin from the Tennis Center at College Park at noon.
