HANOVER, N.H. - Michal Amir, Marianne Baker, Maggie MacKeever, and Eleanor Peters competed in singles and doubles competition over the weekend in the ITA East Regionals Tournament in Hanover, N.H. The tournament was hosted by Dartmouth University.
Amir began the tournament by defeating Turi Kurashima of Temple, 6-4, 6-3, to extend her fall record to 7-1. After advancing in the first round, Amir fell to Beier Ko of Harvard, 3-6, 1-6.
Co-Captain Baker also saw success in the singles competition. After defeating opponents from Dartmouth and Boston College, Baker advanced to the round of 16 where she faced Yulia Rivelis of UPenn. Baker fell by four in the first set but came back to win the second by three. In the third and final set, Baker lost, 6-2. Baker has now compiled a fall season record of 7-6.
Newcomer MacKeever joined the two veteran players to Dartmouth. She faced Tamara John of Cornell in the first round and slid by in three sets, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4. MacKeever fell in the second round to Christine Alford of Yale, 6-4, 6-3.
Peters, also a freshman at Maryland, competed in the tournament, advancing her singles record to 9-4 for the fall season. Peters began the tournament with a win again Masha Pozar of UMass, 6-1, 6-1. She then defeated players from Fairfield and UPenn to advance to the quarterfinals to face Kellie Schmidt of Marshall. After losing the first set, 6-4, Peters came back to win the second set, 6-3, and almost grasped the third, falling 7-6 (3).
Baker and Peters began in the round of 64 and won their first five straight matches to advance to the finals competition to face opponents from William & Mary. While Baker and Peters lost, 8-3, their impressive winning streak has skyrocketed the duo to an 11-4 record for the fall season.
In doubles play, Amir and MacKeever competed together in the tournament. In their first match against opponents from Sacred Heart, they won with a flawless, 8-0. They then advanced to the second round, falling to Old Dominion, 8-3.
