NEW YORK, N.Y. - The No. 50 Maryland women's tennis team pushed its winning streak to three with a 5-2 defeat of No. 70 Columbia Sunday at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center. The Terps (5-4, 0-1 ACC) have won four of their last five matches and have knocked off three Ivy League opponents in that span.
The Terrapins took the lead after winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Junior Ana Belzunce and sophomore Welma Luus , ranked 20th, dispatched of Bianca Sanon and Tiana Takenaga, 8-6, while junior Vroni Van Berlo and sophomore Cristina Stancu defeated Nicole Bartnik and Ioana Alecsiu by the same score.
Freshman Mikele Irazusta continued her good form with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles. The Argentine has won five consecutive matches.
Stancu, ranked 46th, improved to 6-3 at the No. 1 position with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Bartnik, while 90th-ranked Belzunce moved to 7-2 at No. 2 with a straight-set win over Sanon.
Luus won her third match in a row with a straight set victory over Alecsiu.
The Terps return home Thursday, March 1 to face Richmond at 2 p.m. at the Tennis Center at College Park.
