Women's Tennis Ready to Spring into Action

Jan. 29, 2010

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland's head women's tennis coach Howard Joffe will look to blend a mix of veterans and newcomers as the Terps gear up for the spring season.

Joffe, who was hired over the summer to revitalize the program, returns eight players from last year's squad, including Lisa Miller and Jordan Hansbrough who combined for 25 singles wins.

The Terps open dual-match play this weekend and Joffe likes the approach his team has taken in the off-season.

"Ours is a team that is on the rise," Joffe said. "Over the past few months I have seen tremendous improvements in conditioning, in attitude, and in skills. Most poignantly I have seen some of the more established players such as Julia Huschke, Maggie MacKeever and Lisa Miller fall in love again with the sport."

Freshmen Lexi Brand and Burce Kurkan hope to provide a boost on the court this season.

"Our freshmen have done a fabulous job of acclimating to college and will be called upon to contribute right away," Joffe said. "In Lexi and Burce we have two stellar characters and two passionate players who have infused a ton of energy into our efforts to collectively lift the women's tennis program."

Also returning this season are Jordan Harvey, Oksana Krutiyenko, Eleonore Paillaud and Lauren Wolman.

The Terps open the spring season Saturday when they play host to Long Beach State. The match gets underway at 5 p.m. in the Tennis Center at College Park.

Maryland will play its first eight matches at home, including the Atlantic Coast Conference opener on Feb. 13 vs. Boston College.
