NORFOLK, Va. - Sophomore Cristina Stancu upended second-seeded Emily Fraser of Virginia Monday to advance to the finals of the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (USTA/ITA) Atlantic Regional Championships. Junior Ana Belzunce and doubles partner sophomore Welma Luus advanced to the semifinals.
Stancu defeated Fraser, the ITA's 36th-rated player, in the three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. In the final, Stancu will face fifth-seeded Hana Tomljanovic of Virginia. First serve is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday.
In doubles action, Belzunce and Luus upset top-seeded Lindsey Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra of Virginia, the ITA's ninth-ranked doubles team, 8-4. Belzunce and Luus advanced to play William and Mary's Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans in the semifinals.
Senior Jordan Hansbrough and Stancu fell to Virginia's second-seeded pair of Fraser and Tomljanovic in the quarterfinals 8-3.
