#33 Tribe Edge Terps

March 17, 2013

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's tennis team won three singles matches, but fell to No. 33 William & Mary, 4-3, at the Tennis Center at College Park Sunday afternoon.

The Terrapins (5-7, 0-3 ACC) dropped the doubles point, before playing a number of close singles matches and ultimately splitting the session with the Tribe (12-3, 1-0 CAA).

"We just played against a team that last week was a top-25 team in the country and we were within points of beating them," head coach Daria Panova said. "I told the team that they need to understand how good they are. As tennis players I think they are amazing, but they need to start believing a little bit more."

William & Mary jumped on the Terrapins quickly in doubles, with No. 5 Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans defeating senior Vroni Van Berlo and freshman Sarah Gealer, 8-3, at the No. 1 spot, and Anik Cepeda and Hope Johnson downing freshmen Olga and Nataliya Bredikhina, 8-1, at No. 2.

The singles session featured four three set matches as the Terrapins tried to claw back into the match. Olga Bredikhina's 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Jeltje Loomans put Maryland on the board, but losses from freshmen Olga Gaistruk, Gabriela Srodowski and Gealer doomed the Terps.

Van Berlo and Nataliya Bredikhina both picked up wins after the match was decided. The native of the Netherlands continued her strong play at No. 1 with a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 comeback triumph over Maria Belaya. Bredikhina won her second match of the weekend, pulling away late from Sydney Smith in a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 victory.

The loss to the Tribe dropped Maryland's record against ranked teams to 0-6.

The Terps hit the road for their next match this Thursday. Maryland will take on Brown at 2 p.m.
