College Park, Md. - The Maryland women started strong but came up short as the No. 61 Virginia Tech Hokies (5-3, 1-0 ACC) left College Park with a 5-2 victory Friday afternoon.

The Terps (2-4, 0-2 ACC) won the doubles point for the fourth time this season to jump out to an early 1-0 lead.

Lexi Brand and Jordan Hansbrough won their fifth straight doubles match and improved to 5-1 at No. 2 doubles. Their 8-6 victory over the Hokies' Shannon Betts and Christin Newman clinched the doubles point for the Terps. Lisa Miller and Maggie MacKeever also posted an impressive 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles to improve their season record to 4-2.

"Against a team we were an underdog against we had some excellent performances, particularly in the doubles point which we were able to win," said head coach Howard Joffe.

MacKeever won her third straight singles match coming from behind to defeat Virginia Tech's Martha Blakely 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 10-4. MacKeever lost the first set and battled back from down 4-3 in the second set to force a tiebreaker. In the third set MacKeever dominated Blakely winning 10-4.

Sunday the Terrapins travel to Charlottesville, Va. for their first ACC road test of the season against the University of Virginia (5-2, 0-0) at noon.
