Oct. 14, 2012

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Freshman Sarah Gealer fended off three match points en route to a 1-6, 6-4, 11-9 victory on the second day of action at the Miami Invite on Saturday.

Senior Vroni Van Berlo notched her second victory of the tournament, while junior Welma Luus fell in her only match of the day.

Gealer's victory over Akemi Maehama of Barry University was her second as a collegiate player in singles, and advanced her to the orange bracket consolation semifinal, which she dropped to Elizabeth Means of Florida Gulf Coast.

Van Berlo continued her fine play from Friday, putting on a dominant 6-2, 6-0 display against Florida Gulf Coast's Johanna Sterkel.

"I am really proud of the way the Terrapins performed today," head coach Daria Panova said. "We learned from our own mistakes and we played better tennis. The team is getting better with every match."

The Terrapins will continue play on Sunday, with Van Berlo and Gealer both in singles matches at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
