COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior Ana Belzunce and sophomores Cristina Stancu and Welma Luus will represent the Maryland women's tennis team at the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (USTA/ITA) National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships beginning Thursday at the Billie Jean National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Two weeks ago at the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championships, Belzunce and Luus captured the doubles title while Stancu won the singles draw to earn automatic berths into the field.
"Being able to compete at the national indoors marks another milestone for our players and program," said head coach Dianne Matias. "Only 32 singles players and 20 doubles teams from the whole nation qualified for this event. This is another opportunity for our players to continue gaining experience and compete against the top college players in the nation."
Stancu opens the singles draw against the ITA's fourth-ranked player, Washington's Denise Dy, at 11 a.m. Thursday. The doubles draw also begins Thursday with Belzunce and Luus facing Oklahoma's Marie-Pier Huet and Whitney Ritchie at 9 a.m. With a victory, the Terrapin duo faces Duke's Beatrice Capra and Ester Goldfeld at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Stancu enters the indoor championships with a fall record of 6-0 having defeated four nationally ranked opponents. Belzunce and Luus are 5-1 with two wins against nationally ranked doubles teams.
Draw sheets are available on the ITA's website and live scoring will be available once the tournament begins and can be accessed by clicking here. The USTA will be offering a live chat feature available through its website.
