Feb. 20, 2010

College Park, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins (1-3, 0-1 ACC) scored their first win of the season Saturday in a 7-0 shut out of the University of Pennsylvania (2-3, 0-0 Ivy League).

Freshman Burce Kurkan continued her impressive season with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the Quaker's Emma Whitfield at No. 6 singles. Kurkan is now 3-1 on the year, and winner of her last three.

Maryland swept the doubles point for the second straight match getting wins from Lisa Miller and Maggie MacKeever, Jordan Hansbrough and Lexi Brand, and Julia Huschke and Burce Kurkan. For Kurkan and Huschke it is their second straight match with both singles and doubles victories.

Jordan Hansbrough's convincing 6-0, 6-3 win over Jacqueline Wong at No. 5 singles provided the winning point for the Terps. Huschke also had a strong showing winning 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 3 position to start the single's play on a high note.

"I'm really elated for the girls," said head coach Howard Joffe. "Unfortunately, we always measure how we do by winning and losing and the fact is until today, in my view, they've done very well. They're working hard. They're doing a good job. Today was an opportunity where we got a win which reaffirms for them what I've been saying, which is that we've been doing a really good job."

Other Terrapin winners included Miller, MacKeever and Brand, who won at No. 1, 2 and 4 singles, respectively

The Maryland women are back in action Tuesday when they play host to Delaware (2-0, 0-0 CAA) at 10 a make-up of a Feb. 7 match, which was postponed due to weather.
