#63 Hokies Top Terps

March 10, 2013

BLACKBURG, Va - Freshmen Nataliya Bredikhina's and Olga Gaistruk's singles victories were not enough as the Maryland women's tennis team lost to No. 63 Virginia Tech, 5-2, at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.

The Terps dropped the doubles point for the third match in a row before failing to comeback in the singles session.

Featuring the same doubles lineup for the fourth straight match, Maryland's teams were never able to get on track as they fell behind early in all three matches. Senior Vroni Van Berlo and Sarah Gealer lost to Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford at No. 1, 8-2. The Hokies then secured the doubles point when Carol Kahoun and Emily Lauten defeated freshmen Gabriela Srodowski and Gaistruk, 8-5.

In singles, the Terps fought hard, but were only able to secure victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. Gaistruk rebounded from a tough match against Virginia on Saturday, defeating Kahoun, 6-2, 6-3. Bredikhina gave a good account of herself for the second straight match, fighting back from a set deficit to upend Tea Ivanovic, 2-6, 7-6 (4), (10-8).

With the loss, Maryland drops to 0-4 on the road this season. When William & Mary travels to College Park next weekend, five out of Maryland's last six opponents will have been from the state of Virginia. The Terps are currently 1-4 against Virginia-based teams this year.

The Terrapins return to the court next weekend for two home contests. Penn comes to town on Saturday, with play scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. The following day, William & Mary, will take on the Terps. Action is slated to get underway at noon.

Both matches will be contested at the Tennis Center at College Park.
