COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Jessica Johnson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Keith Unikel (Potomac, Md.), members of the women's tennis team and men's golf team, respectively, have been named student-athletes of the week by the Maryland Department of Athletics for the week of April 10-14.

Johnson, a freshman, has been one of the top players on the women's tennis team in her freshman campaign. She boasts an 11-3 record, and leads the team in singles victories with 11. In ACC competition, Johnson has defeated four of the five opponents she has faced. Last Wednesday, she defeated Virginia's Christie Schweer by a score of 6-3, 6-4. Three days later she was victorious at the No. 2 spot as the Terps defeated North Carolina in a five-hour match on Saturday. Johnson defeated the Tar Heels' Caroline Hill in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Johnson and teammate Delila Causevic played a tough match at the No. 1 doubles position, but lost, 9-8. Johnson has a four-match win streak, and has beaten a number of ranked opponents in the fall and spring seasons. She compiled an 8-4 record in the fall. Additionally, Johnson advanced to the quarterfinals of the ACC Indoor Championships in January.

Unikel, one of two seniors on the men's golf team, captured the title at the Furman Intercollegiate last weekend. It marked the first time in over a year a Terp player captured an individual title. The finish also marked Unikel's first individual title in his career. Unikel shot back-to-back rounds of 68 to finish seven-under par with a score of 209 in the two-day tournament.

Unikel led the team to a third-place finish in his come-from-behind victory. He was in ninth place after shooting a 73 in the first round. In the second round, he moved up to third place after shooting a 68. The following day, Unikel turned in a repeat performance, shooting a 68 to tie Virginia's James Driscoll for first in the final round. He defeated Driscoll in a one-hole playoff to capture the tournament title.

This marks the first time Johnson and Unikel have earned student-athlete of the week honors. Johnson is a letters and sciences major, and Unikel is majoring in finance.
