CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The Maryland women's tennis team began play in the Miami Invite, the second tournament of their 2012 fall season, at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Friday.
The team went a combined 1-4 on the day, with the doubles pair of senior Vroni Van Berlo and freshman Sarah Gealer defeating Sterkel and Botha of Florida Gulf Coast to advance to the orange bracket consolation finals.
Van Berlo also gave the Terrapins their best singles effort of the day, losing a tightly contested match 6-7, 7-6, 3-6 to Simona Weymar of North Florida.
Junior Welma Luus and Gealer also dropped their first round singles matches.
"We had a tough first day," head coach Daria Panova said. "We lost a couple of very close matches. I was very impressed with the way the girls fought. There is definitely an improvement in their games as well; we just need to be more consistent with our execution."
Play continues from the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Saturday, with multiple Terrapins competing in both singles and doubles action.
