COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland women's tennis head coach Dianne Matias announced the signing of three highly-touted student-athletes on Monday for the class of 2012. Ashley Kitchen and Sarah Gealer are ranked in the top-60 by Tennisrecruiting.net, and Vroni Van Berlo, a transfer from the University of Southern Mississippi, will arrive in College Park this spring.
"We are really excited and fortunate to have a great group of girls join our program," said Matias. "Vroni will be joining us this spring. She is an excellent student and a fine player. She will make an immediate impact on our program."
Kitchen, a Hilton Head Island, S.C., native is ranked 47th in the 2012 class and is considered the top-rated player in the state. Recently, Kitchen won the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Norcross Regional Tournament and finished second at the Palmetto State Championships in June.
Gealer is from Los Angeles, Calif., and is the 57th-rated player in the class of 2012. This year, Gealer has reached the quarterfinals of three USTA regional events.
"Ashley and Sarah have had a lot of success in their junior careers," said Matias. "They will bring a tremendous amount of experience and spirit. They are talented, hard-working, and fierce competitors. Most importantly, they are good kids on and off the court and in the classroom. I'm excited to work with them."
Van Berlo spent the past two seasons at Southern Mississippi where she played No.1 singles and doubles for the Golden Eagles. A native of the Netherlands, Van Berlo was named to Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll as a sophomore and freshman.
