RALEIGH, N.C. - Despite a singles victory from junior Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and a win by the doubles team of freshman Ramona But (Timisoara, Romania) and senior Marta Jedrzejak (Sieradz, Poland), the University of Maryland women's tennis team dropped its first-round match to Wake Forest Thursday at the ACC Championships. The Demon Deacons capitalized on three singles wins to defeat the Terps, 4-1, in Raleigh.
But and Jedrzejak took down Wake Forest's No. 1 doubles team of Karin Coetzee and Aimee Smith by a score of 8-2, but the Demon Deacons captured the point with wins at No. 2 and 3. But and Jedrzejak finish the season with a team-leading 6-3 overall record.
Marker won in straight sets at No. 2 singles, defeating Wake Forest's Katie Martzolf, 6-1, 6-4, to score a point for the Terrapins. With the Demon Deacons leading in all of the remaining matches, Wake Forest's Danielle Schwartz won the deciding match at No. 5 singles, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3, over junior Chloe Chavardes (St. Nomlabreteche, France).
Maryland finishes the season at 10-11, 2-7 in conference play.
