COLLEGE PARK, Md.-- The University of Maryland women's tennis team, playing for the first time in almost two weeks, lost to Clemson by a score of 6-3 today in Clemson, S.C. The match also marked the first road trip for the Terps in over a month. Freshman Jessica Johnson's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) win today marked her eighth victory of the season and a team high.
Freshman Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) began the match with a hard-fought loss to Carmina Giraldo by a score of 2-6, 7-6, 6-4. Johnson picked up the Terps' first win, defeating Renata Brito, 6-3, 6-4. Junior Catherine Valantin (Metz, France) earned the Terps' second win, with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Christina Oldock. Fellow junior Chrissie Terrill (Plano, Tex.) played a grueling match at the No. 5 position but lost to Anna Savitskaya, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Senior Stacy Walkowitz (Coral Springs, Fla.) also played well for the Terps.
In doubles action, the Terps' lost the first match but bounced back to win the second. The duo of Valantin and Terrill defeated Clemson's Brito and Laurence Jayet by a score of 9-7.
The Terps (6-6, 0-2 ACC) continue their road trip as they travel to Georgia Tech to face the Yellow Jackets tomorrow at noon. The Terps defeated Georgia Tech last season by a score of 5-4.
