COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's tennis team remained unbeaten at 5-0 with a 6-1 victory over the University of Richmond on Saturday in College Park. Maryland won five out of six singles matches and two out of three doubles matches en route to the win.
The doubles team of junior Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and freshman Ramona But (Timisoara, Romania) defeated Richmond's Lindsay Cox and Meghan Wolfgram, 8-4, at the No. 1 seed. Senior Marta Jedrzejak (Sieradz, Poland) and junior Chloe Chavardes (St. Nomlabreteche, France) also came up with a doubles victory for the Terps, beating Richmond's Casey Cohen and Katie Karhohs, 8-5.
In singles action, Marker pulled out a three-set win over Lindsay Cox, 6-1, 7-6, 6-2. But, playing at the No. 2 spot, cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Vanessa Bagnato. Chavardes also won in straight sets, beating Courtney Klein 6-3, 6-0.
Freshmen Jennifer Dent (Safety Harbor, Fla.) and Andreea Fusea (Bucharest, Romania) both won after being taken to three sets at the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds, respectively. Dent beat Katie Karhohs 6-0, 4-6, 6-3, while Fusea hung on to beat Casey Cohen, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Terps will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 16, when they take on Virginia Commonwealth. That match is scheduled to begin at noon at the Tennis Center at College Park.
