Maryland Edges Yale, 4-3, In Spring Opener

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Maryland women's tennis team opened the spring season in style Saturday afternoon with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Yale in a non-conference match played at the Skytop Tennis Courts on the campus of Syracuse University.

The Terrapins, who entered the spring No. 37 in the national rankings, swept the doubles to earn one point and then split the six singles matches with freshman Lisa Miller providing the clincher with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win over the Bulldogs' Lillian Nguyen at the No. 6 position. Maryland also won at the No. 2 and 3 singles spots.

The Terps conclude their road trip tomorrow (10 a.m.) vs. Syracuse. The Orangemen (1-0) downed Yale, 4-3, Friday evening. Yale fell to 0-2 with today's loss.

Marianne Baker, a native of Glenelg, Md., showed plenty of senior leadership for the Terps, combining with Eleanor Peters at the No. 1 doubles position on an 8-0 shutout of Jessica Rhee and Janet Kim. Baker, ranked No. 13 in the East Region, went on to defeat Rhee in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) at the No. 2 singles position. Baker and Peters entered the spring as the second-ranked duo in the region.

Maryland's Michal Amir and Maggie MacKeever, playing in the No. 2 slot, clinched the doubles point with a 9-7 victory over Christine Alford and Sarah Leaderhandler.

Peters was upset in her No. 1 singles match, though Kim came in ranked No. 12 in the East Region. Kim swept Peters, 6-3, 6-0. Peters, a native of Washington, D.C., entered the match ranked No. 8 in the region.

Amir won at singles in convincing fashion for her second victory of the day. Amir posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Leaderhandler at the No. 3 position, to improve her singles record to 8-2 this season.

Elyse Steiner split the first two sets (3-6, 7-5), but lost to Alford, 10-4, in a tie-breaker after the Terps went ahead 4-1 to secure the match.

A native of Rockville, Md., MacKeever fell to Olivia Nix, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5 singles.
