COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's tennis team will begin play at the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (USTA/ITA) Atlantic Regional Championships in Norfolk, Va., Friday. Four Terps will compete in the singles draw with two teams participating in the doubles draw.
Senior Jordan Hansbrough is the first Terrapin to take the court. Hansbrough will begin play in the singles qualifying draw Friday morning against Julia Blakley of George Washington. With a victory, Hansbrough will advance to play the winner of the match between Virginia Tech's Katie Blow and Temple's Paola Calderon.
Three more Terps begin play Saturday morning in the main singles draw. Junior Ana Belzunce takes on Towson's Nisha Shah. Sophomore Cristina Stancu meets Virginia's Marjorie Baker, and sophomore Welma Luus faces Norfolk State's Naeemah Brooks.
The doubles draw begins Saturday. Belzunce and Luus, and Hansbrough and Stancu received byes in the first round. They will begin play in the round of 32.
