COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 48th-ranked Maryland women's tennis team swept doubles play and won 4 of 6 singles matches en route to a 5-2 victory over Richmond Thursday afternoon at the Tennis Center at College Park. The Terps (6-4, 0-1 ACC) have now won four consecutive matches.
After junior Vroni Van Berlo and junior Cristina Stancu won at No. 2 doubles, 25th-ranked Ana Belzunce and Welma Luus won their second consecutive match to secure the doubles point for the Terps. Senior Jordan Hansbrough and freshman Mikele Irazusta completed the sweep for Maryland at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, 36th-ranked Stancu dispatched of Joanna Matuszczyk in straight sets to increase Maryland's lead to 3-1. Van Berlo cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Alexandra Smyth in the first completed match in singles play.
After the Spiders pulled within one with a victory at No. 5, Belzunce won her fourth match in a row to clinch the win for the Terps. Luus concluded the day with a 10-7 victory in the third set over Helen Cunningham for her fourth consecutive victory.
The Terps return to action Sunday, March 4 at 1 p.m. against ACC-rival Virginia Tech at the Tennis Center at College Park.
