COLLEGE PARK, Md - The University of Maryland women's tennis team improved to 4-0 after defeating American University, 7-0. All six Terps notched straight set singles wins. Maryland won two out of the three doubles matches.
The doubles tandem of junior Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and freshman Ramona But (Timisoara, Romania) defeated American's Kristina Georgieva and Katarina Kollarova, 8-4, at the No.1 seed. At No. 3 doubles, senior co-captain Marta Jedrzejak and junior Chloe Chavardes (St. Nomlabreteche, France) cruised by Ashley Retlev and Brandi Klingman, 8-0.
Maryland captured all six singles games. Marker set the tone with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Aleksandra Zerkalova. But handed Kollarova a 6-1, 6-3 loss at the No. 2 spot. Jedrzejak recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win over Olga Mikhailova, while Jennifer Dent (Safety Harbor, Fla.) also had a straight set 6-3, 6-3 win.
The Terps' roster has great depth down to the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds. Freshman Andreea Fusea (Bucharest, Romania) and Chavardes downed their American opponents as well.
The Terps play host on Feb. 15 and Feb. 16 to Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth, respectively. Both games are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Tennis Center at College Park.
