ANNAPOLIS, Md. Maryland head football coach Randy Edsall joined president & executive director of the Military Bowl Steve Beck, and Marshall head coach Doc Holliday for a press conference at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md., on Thursday in preparation for the 2013 Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman.

The Terps and Thundering Herd are scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Friday, Dec. 27.

“It’s a pleasure for the University of Maryland and our football program to be a part of the Military Bowl,” said Edsall. “Our players, when they found out we were coming here, they were very excited about the opportunity that they were going to have to play another game, play it here at Navy-Marine Corps [Memorial] Stadium, here in the City of Annapolis, and also be able to have their family and their friends not have to travel far to see them play.”

Despite it being the first all-time matchup between Maryland and Marshall, Edsall and Holliday have history as both coaches have faced each other on the field and on the recruiting trail. With that experience in mind, Edsall expects a stiff challenge from Holliday’s Herd.

“And you know, I’m excited from the standpoint that I get a chance to be around Doc again for a while,” said Edsall. “We kind of cut our roots together in the coaching profession as assistants, and spending a lot of time on the road down in Florida, and recruiting. I know we have a tremendous challenge in front of us playing against his team, and you watch them on film and you just see a team that is very athletic, very fast and they’re well coached. I wouldn’t expect anything less from a Doc Holliday Team.”

“Believe it or not I’ve had the opportunity to play Maryland 27 times in my career,” said Holliday. “I’ve been on the sideline 27 times against them, I’ve got great, great respect for their program. They’ve got tremendous athletes. Randy being the coach there, they’re going to be very well-coached, they’re going to be extremely physical, and they’ll get after us and they’ve got really good players.”

With a stiff test from Marshall on the horizon, Edsall still views the trip to the Military Bowl as reward for the team’s hard work and is happy for the team.

“I feel great for our kids,” said Edsall. “I have been able to experience bowls in a lot of different place. For some of our players, it will be their first experience. That’s what you do it for. You do it for them. It’s a reward for their hard work and perseverance they put in.”
