Sept. 12, 2010
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's golf team will open the 2010-11 competition year with a fall tournament in Kiawah Island, S.C., starting Monday, Sept. 13 to Tuesday, Sept. 14. The Terrapins will take part in The Invitational at Ocean Course hosted by College of Charleston.
With the return of all starters from last year's squad and the addition of the Bosdosh brothers, Stephen (20) and Sean (18), Maryland is set for great heights this season.
Maryland's upperclassmen ranks have a solid lineup headed by seniors Tom Hanna III and Andrew Kay. In the junior class is Terrapin standout John Popeck who led the team five times last year and earned five top-20 finishes, two in the top-10. Sean Bosdosh claimed the crown in this year's 89th Maryland Amateur this past weekend on the Golf Course at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. He is now the youngest champion in Amateur history. Bosdosh turned 18 in May.
Following the road tournament, the Terps return home to host the Maryland Intercollegiate at the Hyatt River Marsh Golf Club September 18 and 19. Last year junior John Popeck and Sean Brannan finished top-20 in the challenging field which included multiple Atlantic Coast Conference members.
At the end of the month, the Terrapins return to Rehoboth Beach, Del., for the Rehoboth Beach Fall Invite. Last season in the spring Maryland claimed the crown for the second straight season. Popeck led the Terps with a second place finish at the one-day tournament with a one-under-par 141.
October has Maryland taking a trip to ACC country in Raleigh, N.C., for the Wolfpack Intercollegiate on the 4th and 5th. The following weekend the Terps close out their fall slate in Akron, Ohio, at the Firestone Invitational. Last fall Maryland competed only as individuals. Senior Andrew Kay was the team's top performer coming in fifth.
