NEWPORT, R.I. - Senior Tim Kane shot a 74 Tuesday to tie for eighth individually and lead Maryland to a fourth-place finish in the team standings at the 10th-annual Adams Cup of Newport men's golf tournament hosted by the University of Rhode Island.
Kane (Simsbury, Conn.) finished the 54-hole event at 221 after posting rounds of 71 and 76 in Monday's 36 holes. He placed just ahead of fellow Terrapin senior Dan MacDonald (Plandome, N.Y), who was tied for 12th at 222. MacDonald had a final round of 76 in the event, played at the par-72 Newport National Golf Club.
Maryland placed fourth in a field that was dominated by former national champion Minnesota. The Terrapins shot 296-295-303 for a total of 894 in a tightly-contested team tournament.
The Gophers dominated the team finish, scoring a 4-under 860 to win by 24 shots. Minnesota placed the top three finishers in the individual standings and shot 282 on Tuesday, which was eight shots better than any other team in the field. Michigan State was second at 884, while 12 shots separated the next eight teams, a group led by third-place finisher South Florida at 891.
Also for Maryland, John Eades (Charlotte, N.C.) finished in a tie for 23rd at 75-76-74-225, while Bobby MacWhinnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also cracked the top 30 with a finish of 76-72-79-227. Jeff Spradlin (Leawood, Kan.) had a final-round 79 Tuesday to finish tied for 48th at 78-75-79-232.
Maryland, which won The McLaughlin over the weekend at Bethpage Red, has off the next three weeks before returning to the northeast to play in The Tillinghast in Scarsdale, N.Y., on Oct. 19 and 20.
