University of Maryland senior-to-be Tim Kane reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship recently, adding to a list of strong summer efforts by Terrapin golfers.
Kane, from Simsbury, Conn., won three matches en route to the quarters, where he lost 3 & 2 to Luke List. In his first-round match, Kane defeated No. 3-seed Chris Wheeler, 2 & 1 after qualifying for the match-play part of the event by shooting 151.
Kane then beat Jeffrey Castle, 4 & 3, and Danny Green, 5 & 4, to reach the quarters. He also shot a 143 over 36 holes at a sectional-qualifying tournament in Ridgefield, Conn., to rank as the first alternate for the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Two Terrapins will begin play in the prestigious U.S. Amateur on Monday. John Eades, a Terp sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., and Dan MacDonald, a senior-to-be from Plandome, N.Y., will play the first of two rounds in stroke play. The top 64 players in the 312-player field after Tuesday's second round will advance to a match-play bracket.
