UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - With its best first day showing of the year, the University of Maryland men's golf team stands second after the first two rounds of the Rutherford Intercollegiate held at Penn State's Blue Course. The Terps, who held a four-shot lead after shooting a two-under-par score of 286 for the first 18 holes, shot 291 in the second round and were passed by tournament host Penn State's eight-under-par 280 for the second 18 holes. At Penn State's home course, the Terps' total of 577 trails the Nittany Lions' 573 by only four shots, while North Carolina-Wilmington sits third at 578.

Maryland boasts four golfers in the individual top 20 after the second round. Leading the way for the Terps is junior John Moheyer (Lima, Ohio), who posted consecutive par-or-better rounds in the spring for the first time by shooting 71-72-143. His one-under-par total is tied for eighth, five shots behind individual leader Jeff Turton of Penn State (138).

For the Terps, senior Corey Brigham (Rumson, N.J.) and sophomore Tim Kane (Simsbury, Conn.) sit in a tie for 15th place at 145. Brigham shot his team-leading ninth under-par score of the spring in the first round with a two-under 70, while Kane recorded his first sub-par score of the spring in the second round with a one-under 71.

Returning to the course where he won medalist honors at the 2000 Pennsylvania High School Championships, freshman Bobby MacWhinnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.) stands in a tie for 19th at 147. Senior Phillip Fenstermaker (Rockville, Md.) recovered nicely from a first-round 80 by shooting an even-par 72 in the second round to tie for 40th place.

Play resumes tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. with the third and final round of the Rutherford Intercollegiate.
