NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Dan MacDonald shot a 3-over-par final round of 73 to lead the University of Maryland to a top-20 finish Saturday on the final day of the 2004 NCAA East Regional men's golf tournament being held at The Course at Yale.
MacDonald finished tied for 23rd individually after the third and final round and was the top Maryland finisher. He came into the NCAA's with the top scoring average on the Maryland team this season.
Maryland finished 20th (306-298-301-897) as a team at the qualifying tournament. ACC foe Clemson was the top team with a total score of 856. The top 10 teams will compete at the NCAA Division I Nationals, to be held June 1-4 at the Greenbrier in Hot Springs, Va.
Also for Maryland on Saturday, Bobby MacWhinnie shot a 73 to tie for 68th and freshman Matt Schall shot a 77 to tie for 99th in his debut at the regional tournament. John Eades finished with a 78 to finish 106, while Tim Kane ended with a 78 to finish tied for 138th.
Bill Haas of Wake Forest won the regional crown with a final score of three-under-par 207. In addition to the win, Haas secured one of the individual qualifying spots for nationals. Just three players finished under par, with Kenneth Fahey of Rhode Island and Camilo Villegas of Florida finishing tied for second place with a 2-under-par 208.
