KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Maryland's Tim Kane fired a 2-under 70 on Monday to place fourth individually and lead the Terrapins to seventh place in the team standings after the opening round of the Cleveland Golf/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate Tournament being hosted by the College of Charleston.
Maryland finished with a team total of 300 in the 18 holes played Monday. Rain forced tournament officials to shorten Monday's play to 18 holes, with the final 18 to be played on Tuesday. Tyler Witman shot a 71 in his Terrapin debut to earn a tie for fifth. Only nine players finished under par in on the par-72 Turtle Point Golf Course at the Kiawah Island Resort.
Aron Price of Georgia Southern was the individual leader after the first round, shooting a 65. Mark Blakefield of Kentucky and Pope Spruiell of Ole Miss were tied for second after 68s.
Maryland finished the first round only eight shots behind Ole Miss, which leads the team standings with a total of 292. Virginia was in second at 295.
The Cleveland Golf/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate is the first of four tournaments on the Terps' fall schedule.
