COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Seeking a return to the NCAA Golf Championships after an absence in 2001, the University of Maryland has announced its spring golf schedule for 2001-02.
Under the tutelage of 11th-year head coach Tom Hanna, the Terrapins will compete in seven spring tournaments, beginning on March 16-17 in Charlotte, N.C., at the Charlotte Invitational. Maryland returns nine letterwinners among its 10-player roster, four of which having finished as finalists last summer in various U.S. Amateur qualifying tournaments.
Seniors Corey Brigham (Rumson, N.J.) and Pete Toole (Lancaster, Pa.), and junior John Moheyer (Lima, Ohio) lead the cast of returning players who led Maryland to top 10 finishes in each of five tournaments during fall 2001. Maryland won top honors at the Temple Intercollegiate, finished second at the ODU Seascape Invitational and was third at the JMU Invitational. The Terps were top finishers in four of their five fall tournaments.
Maryland opens the spring schedule with back-to-back tournaments, at Charlotte and Aiken, S.C., for four tournament dates in five days (March 16-17 and March 18-19). After a trip to the William & Mary Invitational on March 25-26, the Terps play another pair of tournaments during a five-day stretch, at the Liberty Spring Golf Classic (April 8-9) and the Wofford Invitational (April 10-11).
Ranked No. 40 in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings through fall events in December, Maryland takes part in the annual ACC Championships on April 19, 20 and 21, with five of the other eight institutions all ranked among the nation's top 25.
Prior to a hopeful bid to its third NCAA regional competition in the last four years, the Terps conclude their spring schedule at Penn State's Rutherford Invitational on April 27-28.
