Terps in 10th Place at ACC Men's Golf

NEW LONDON, N.C. - Chris Gold fired a 1-over-par 73 Saturday for a two-round total of 144 to lead University of Maryland players at the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Golf Championship being played at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point.

Gold had three birdies on the day en route to his 73 that put him in a tie for 14th place after two of three rounds in the conference tournament. The sophomore transfer is in position to post a top-20 finish individually in his first appearance at the ACC Championship.

As a team, Maryland shot 303 in the second round, finishing the day in 10th place for the second straight round. The Terrapins had a two-day total of 603, 13 strokes away from NC State in a battle for ninth.

Also for Maryland on Saturday, senior Tyler Witman fired a 73 Saturday to move up the leaderboard and finish at 150 and a tie for 39th. Matt Schall tied for 47th at 154 following a second-round 78, with Brendan Tracy in 49th at 155 following a 79 on Saturday. Hunter Bendall was in 53rd at 160 after two rounds.

Georgia Tech shot a 283 on Saturday to climb into the lead in the team standings. The Yellow Jackets were at 570 after two rounds, two shots head of Duke, which shot 286 on Saturday. Clemson was in third at 573.

Individually, Martin Ureta of North Carolina shot a 70 on Saturday to earn the lead at 5-under-par 139. After starting the day one stroke out of the lead, Ureta holds a one-stroke edge over Cameron Tringate of Georgia Tech and Kyle Stanley of Clemson.
