Sept. 10, 2009

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland men's golf team begins the Fall 2009 season this weekend when it plays host to the Maryland Intercollegiate at River Marsh Golf Club in Cambridge, Md.

Other schools participating in the Maryland Intercollegiate are Virginia Commonwealth, East Carolina, Xavier, NC State, Kent State, Georgetown, Towson, Penn, Old Dominion, Akron, William & Mary, Virginia, Texas State and North Carolina.

The first two rounds of play will be played Saturday with the third and final round set for Sunday, weather permitting.

Sophomore John Popeck is the leading returner for the Terrapins. Popeck led the Terps with a scoring average of 72.9 last season and all 27 of his rounds counted toward the team score in the fall and spring seasons, combined.

Overall, Maryland returns an experienced group, as Popeck, Donnie Shin, Brendan Tracy, Joey Rice, Andrew Kay, Tom Hanna III, Chris Miller and Jake Daly are all back.

Maryland finished fifth in last year's Maryland Intercollegiate, led by Kay, who shot a 1-over-par 143. Arkansas won last year's tournament.
