Terps Finish Third at JMU Invitational

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Senior Dan MacDonald shot a final round 70 Tuesday to lead Maryland to a third-place finish in the team standings at the James Madison Invitational men's golf tournament played at the Lakeview Golf Course.

MacDonald (Plandome, N.Y.) finished third overall at 7-under 206, with all three of his rounds in the tournament being under par. He was one of only four players who bested the par of 71 at Lakeview in all three rounds.

As a team, Maryland held onto third place after finishing with a 285 in the final round. The Terps failed to make up any ground on Georgetown, which won the team title at 846. Host James Madison made a run at the Hoyas by firing a 281, but finished the tournament one shot behind. Towson placed fourth, just two shots behind the Terrapins.

Tim Kane (Simsbury, Conn.) rallied for a final-round 69, posting the Terps' low round of the day. He moved from 23rd into a tie for ninth in the final individual standings at even-par 213.

John Eades (Charlotte, N.C.) had a 72 Tuesday for a 215 total, tying for 15th and giving Maryland three players who finished in the top 15 in the tournament.

Bobby MacWhinnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished in a tie for 35th at 219 after a final-round 74, while Tyler Witman (Rehobeth Beach, Del.) shot an 80 in the third round to finish the tournament at 238.

Brent Pittman of Rutgers had the low round of the day, with his 5-under 66 carrying him from fifth to the individual title. Pittman finished 9-under for the tournament at 204. Nick Cook of Georgetown, who led each of the first two rounds, was one shot back after a 72 on Tuesday.

Maryland continues its fall schedule on Sept. 26 and 27 at The McLaughlin tournament on the Bethpage Red Course in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Terps remain in the northeast on Sept. 29 and 30 to play in the Adams Cup in Newport, R.I.
