LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The University of Maryland men's golf team wrapped up its first postseason appearance in three years by finishing 21st in the NCAA Men's Golf Championships Central Regional at Pleasant Valley Country Club. The Terps completed their rain-delayed second round in the morning by registering a 304 and then shot a final-round 307 to finish with a three-day total of 912.

As the weather worsened for the final two rounds and the pairings became more jumbled, scores soared over par for the final 36 holes. The Terps were faced not only with the unforgiving rainy and windy weather and unyielding scoring conditions over the last two days but also had to endure a difficult schedule due to two separate rain delays on Friday.

As a result, Maryland was forced to finish its second round beginning at 7:15 a.m. local time Saturday its third-round tee time was pushed back to 12:45 p.m. Just like the rest of the field, the Terps' scores increased, launching Maryland from its early third-round position of 16th place and nine shots out of advancing to its final result of 21st place and 26 shots from advancing.

With matching one-over-par scores of 865, Oklahoma State and Purdue ran away from the field to claim the regional's co-champion honors. The third-place team, Tulsa, was 11 shots back at 876. The cut line was set at 22-over-par at 886, as 10th-place Colorado was the last team to advance to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships finals May 29-June 1 at Ohio State's Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.

Sophomore Tim Kane (Simsbury, Conn.) was the 22nd-seeded Terps' most consistent performer throughout the regional, as he recorded solid rounds of 74-74-75 to claim Maryland's top score for the first time this season at 223. Kane finished in a tie for 45th, while junior John Moheyer (Lima, Ohio) tied for 75th with a 12-over total of 228. Senior Phillip Fenstermaker (Rockville, Md.) tied for 85th with 229, senior Corey Brigham (Rumson, N.J.) tied for 96th at 232 and freshman Bobby MacWhinnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tied for 124th with 240.

Purdue's Lee Williamson won medalist honors with a seven-under-par total of 209.

Maryland finished its best season since 1998-99 by claiming its third NCAA Regionals appearance in coach Tom Hanna's 11-year tenure. The Terps recorded nine top-six finishes in 12 regular season tournaments, including victories at the October 5-6 Temple Invitational and April 8-9 Liberty Classic, and boasted their first All-ACC performer, Brigham, since 2000. Maryland will return six players next season from the 2001-02 second-ranked team in the mid-Atlantic District II.
