LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The University of Maryland men's golf team completed day one of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships Central Regional at Pleasant Valley Country Club with an 11-over-par total of 299. The Terps are 17th in the 27-team field after the first round, 12 shots behind leader Oklahoma State (287) and six shots from the 10th place position that would advance the Terps to the Championships finals.

On a day where windy conditions kept all teams but Oklahoma State (one-under) above par, the Terps played in the second-earliest pairing at 7:57 a.m. and got off to a fast start on the Pleasant Valley's front nine. Maryland was poised for a top-10 placing, but with the back nine playing extremely difficult on the windy day, the Terps dropped a couple of shots coming in to finish the day in 17th and five positions better than their seeding of 22nd.

"The guys are a little disappointed with the finish," Hanna said. "They're not elated, but they know they're right in it."

The Terps lead five higher-seeded teams, including 8th-seeded Lamar (306) and 11th-seeded Louisiana State (301).

"We're not in bad shape," coach Tom Hanna said. "We got the jitters out of the way and we're right in the middle of the pack."

Recording the Terps' best score on the day was senior Phillip Fenstermaker (Rockville, Md.). He scored an even-par 72 to stand in a 24th-place tie, four shots behind individual co-leaders Bret Guetz of TCU (68, -4) and John Kidwell of Oklahoma (68, -4)

Sophomore Tim Kane (Simsbury, Conn.) shot a two-over-par total of 74 and sits in a tie for 43rd. Junior John Moheyer (Lima, Ohio) is one shot behind Kane after shooting a 75 (T-57th), while senior Corey Brigham (Rumson, N.J.) and freshman Bobby MacWhinnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.) each recorded 78s to tie for 96th after the first round.

Play resumes tomorrow with the second round of the Central Regional. The Terps will compete with St. John's and Austin Peay State in the late pairing, with tee times between 12:36-1:12 p.m.
